WEKU reporter Stu Johnson spent a day with Father Beiting and the Mission Center staff at a Christmas distribution in Inez. Listen to his story.
Donna Wege of Kansas arranged her Christmas travel plans so that she could deliver a vanload of donations for the Mission Center. The donation of books, toys, winter clothing and household items were collected by Donna’s daughter in response to the 20/20 episode about children in Appalachia. Thanks to diocesan grantwriter, Jill Heink for meeting Donna outside Louisville to receive the goods.
Father Beiting was recently interviewed by TheFlyPod.com, a web-based alternative news and information source.
When I first visited the new Mission Center, I was so impressed with the bright clean walls and spacious offices. It is all so different from the office and store on Lackey Avenue. As I wandered through the building, I came to a room which was very different from the rest. Its is called “Holy Family Chapel” and is a lovely peaceful space, complete with stained glass window.
Its a place where harried workers can find solace during a trying day, a space where volunteers can pray for someone they’ve met at the thrift store who is going through a particularly trying time. In short, its just what the Mission Center needs, a place of prayer, to remind us that we are about God’s work, all is in His hands, not ours. Thank you, Father, for making a chapel part of the new Mission Center!
Over the hills and everywhere (in Louisa!) people are talking about the new Appalachian Mission Center. The thrift store is stocked with Christmas gifts and decorations, and the prices are bound to please even the most frugal holiday shopper. Last week I had the opportunity to visit the center, and I was so impressed by the size of the facility and the friendliness of the staff. The store is re-stocked weekly, so be sure to stop by often to find something for everyone on your list!
