IMG_5954At long last our Mission Center is completed.  It is such a joy to walk inside and see the potential that is there.

The facility has offices, lunchroom, restrooms, meeting areas, freezers and is ready to accept goods of every kind.  The thrift store and its preparation area is an attractive space.

We have 10 offices and two large training areas for computer classes and community group meetings.  Everyone who has toured the place says, “Please don’t call this a warehouse.  It is a place where dreams are born.  It is a place to unite good people of all persuasions.  It will house the donations of a caring America.

Thanks be to God because of it Christ will reach out to more than 50,000 needy people on a regular basis.

We are still in serious debt.  In the main entrance, we are having our donor recognition board  where we will list the names of all who wish to donate $500 and above.

You name will look splendid there.

I wanted to give you an update on the family whose trailer had turned into a pig pen.  We have fixed up a different trailer for them and put it into good condition.

But, I have determined to go deeper.  He is in terrible debt and has no credit.  He has lost the ability to plan on how to use the little resources they have.  I have paid for him to go through a local bankruptcy lawyer and get on a level track.  The family has agreed with me to allow me and one of our permanent volunteers to plan a budget for them that will keep on their feet and get a new beginning.  I am so dedicated to solving problems and not putting band-aids on them.  It may cost more in time and resources, but I want a healing to take place so that hope will follow.

I appreciate so much the support you have given me to make this change come about.

Almost 250 people gathered at the Embassy Suites in Lexington to honor Father Beiting 60 years of service to the people of Appalachia.  Under the skillful oversight of master of ceremonies, Nick Clooney, Father Beiting was both roasted and toasted.  Longtime friend and colleague Father Frank Osburg entertained the crowd with colorful stories of life as Father Beiting’s associate pastor.  Former Governor Paul Patton was on hand to praise Father Beiting for his efforts to help people in Eastern Kentucky break the bonds of poverty.  The Diocese of Lexington’s Secretary for Social Services, Ruslyn Case-Compton shared the Catholic Church’s commitment to preserving Father’s legacy and Bishop Ronald Gainer praised Father Beiting for his unserving faith and devotion to the work of a missionary.

A DVD of the event is available for purchase for only $25.

Father Beiting travels to many parishes in the Eastern United States to speak about conditions in Appalachia and the work of the Mission Center.  Here is an excerpt from a homily he gave on September 6 at a parish in Florida.  We’d like to thank Mission Center supporter Jack Prietsch for recording and preparing this segment.  Stay tuned…we have more to post!
