We need boxes 48 x 40 x 36 Gaylord Container these would be used to store bags of clothes and bedding. This way we could store them on our pallet racks to better organize our warehouse. We also are still looking for a 3 stage fork lift and a box truck under 26,000lbs to be used for pick ups and deliveries.

The Mission Center needs to raise $8,000 to fund the remodel of the Point of Hope community kitchen. Due to the increase in the numbers of individuals and groups frequenting the Point of Hope Community Center (POHCC), certain improvements to the limited kitchen facilities are needed to better support the POH mission.

The Community Center currently serves a wide variety of people who assemble for various purposes.

These include four weekly 12-step meetings for persons recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, open to the public; programs and services for 11 resident families and their children, totaling approximately 55 persons per meeting; hosting hundreds of volunteers in service to FBAMC throughout the year; seasonal and special events for the FBAMC community at large; and providing facilitities to five employees of POH.

The ongoing preparation and consumption of coffee, meals and refreshments currently generates large quantities of costly paper and plastic waste, definitely not good for the environment. When durable dishes and utensils are used, the practice of dishwashing by hand may at times fail to meet necessary standards of cleanliness. During flu season, the matter of good hygiene becomes even more important.

As the population served by the POHCC continues to grow, upgrades to the kitchen have become more urgent. The proposed remodel, which includes a commercial size dishwasher, heavy duty stove and upright freezer, will allow the Community Center to better fulfill its mission to serve as a gathering place for members of the Point of Hope and wider Mission Center community.

If you are interested in donating to this project, please select “Point of Hope kitchen remodel” when making your gift via our secure online system.

The Mission Center is looking for a new Director of Operations following the departure of Phillip Teague on June 18. Phillip left his post to pursue a job opportunity closer to his family in Ohio. While Phillip was only at the Mission Center for 6 months, he was able to accomplish many things, moving the center forward in a very positive fashion. The DOO who succeeds him will be able to build on the strong foundation established by Phillip. Please join us in wishing Phillip well in his future career endeavors.

I am also going to have some other needs. I have needs for the Bible Schools of vans; I am 2 vans short of picking up to bring the children in and taking care of them.

We are in need of another box truck to bring things into our warehouse. The Cralle Foundation kindly gave us a grant for one-half the money needed to purchase a new truck, but we need to raise the rest of the money–about $8,000.

We can also use cargo vans where we can deliver things around and make it possible for things to happen in that way.

If you can donate, I would be grateful. You may donate online through our secure website.

As always I am grateful for your support.

“I mentioned to you in another letter a family that lost their home. I mentioned this couple and their daughter that lost everything they own when a fire destroyed their trailer and the building next to it that housed their water pump and their water supply. I put them in one of our trailers in Inez and I have been working with them trying to find out how I can help them and how they can help themselves. They would like to have another trailer back on the property they own. They do have a septic system and a source of water if we can get a pump and a tank to hold the water.

Then a wonderful donor, the son-in-law of one of our permanent volunteers, Larry Presser, and his wife, Larry’s daughter, came down and they have changed that trailer we had gotten through their help into a beautifully livable place. They cleaned up all the debris, they put new drywall on the walls, they put new flooring and carpeting down, they put lights up, smoke detectors, and all the rest. When you look at that trailer when they left here this past weekend, it looks like it just came off the factory floor. All of it was done through their love. When they came down from Northern Kentucky, which is a 150-mile trip, they worked on that thing day after day and they furnished much of the stuff at their own expense. We now have it ready to be moved, so this family can begin to have a home of their own.

What I asked the family, as a part of my philosophy to get families to help themselves, is, ‘How much income do you have as a family?’

They said, ‘We have about $900 a month.’ The woman is in bad physical shape and she has to undergo dialysis three days a wee; making about a 60-mile round trip. She has short term memory problems; she can’t remember where she is, she has no idea why she is there or anything, so the husband can’t leave her. He has to stay with her and help her, so that means he can’t get a job. It is very difficult for them. Their daughter has just finished her second year of high school and is an honor student. They are hoping they can get her a scholarship to go to college.

I said, ‘How much could you be putting in to help us because we are running into a lot of expense on this?’

He said, ‘I think we could give you half of our income for the house trailer, the rent you given us, all the utilities you given us and the water pump you’ll have to buy.’

I thought to myself, ‘We are really touching their hearts too. They want to be part of their own answer.’ I think that makes donors feel so much better when they realize that people we are helping aren’t just out there with their hands open all the time saying give me everything you can. They’re syaing we’ll give everything we can if you help us. When you give half your monthly income for your survival that seems to me to be a wonderful way. Hopefully, we are going to be able to have this trailer moved for them the first week or two in June. So please keep them in your prayers and we will be forever grateful for that.

Our Mission is made possible because of those everyday folks who know that sharing the gifts they have been given is what Christ calls us to do. I have had the pleasure of working with so many amazingly talented and faith filled people in my brief time in Eastern Kentucky. I want to share with you just one of many who has left a lasting impression on Eastern Kentucky and all those who visit the Mission Center with their “SIGN of LOVE .”

Jim Wertner and his family own a sign shop in Pennsylvania. Father Beiting came back from speaking at St. Mark’s in Green Castle, PA and gave me Jim’s contact information and said he may be able to help with some of our sign needs at the new Warehouse and Mission Center. I called Jim and knew right away I was working with a professional. Jim asked me for a list of our needs and some design suggestions. I provided and he took it from there. The results speak for themselves. I consider myself honored, blessed to spend the time I did on the phone and through emails working out the details with Jim Wertner.

Wertner Team - Jim, Andy, Geremie and Ben - thank you for your gift to Eastern Kentucky. Your signs will direct those to a place where needs will be met, lives will be changed and people will grow.

To all those who share their gifts – know that the fruits of your labor make a difference in so many lives in Appalachia.

Please take the time to view the following video. It is of a volunteer group from Bowling Green State University in Northwest Ohio. They took their Spring Break in the Mountains. One of the projects they accomplished was the installation one of Wertner Teams’ signs. Another ”Sign of Love.”
